PRE-REGISTERED CARS

Want the absolute best value car for your money? Check out our used car deals of the week that offer plenty of bang for your buck

Dec 6, 2022

If you're looking for a new car, buying a brand-new one has to be one of the most expensive ways to go about it. If you don't fancy going for a used car, however, there is another, far better value way to get that new car smell and feel-good factor of driving the very latest model: pre-registered cars and new cars in stock.

Pre-registered cars, to all intents and purposes, are brand new, with fewer than 100 miles on the clock, and less than a year old. However, because they've been registered by a dealer - normally so the dealer can hit sales targets by selling the car to themselves - you are the second owner rather than the first.

In exchange for not being the first owner - even though no one except you are going to know - these effectively new cars come with some pretty substantial discounts. So if you want a new car but you like the idea of saving thousands, this could be the way to do it.

Alternatively, if you're on a tighter budget, or want even more cars for your money, used cars can make even more sense - you can also check out some of our best deals on 2020 cars. Yes, the car may not look like it's rolled straight out of the factory, but in exchange, you can typically save yourself many thousands more - even compared with a pre-reg car. You can also choose to buy your next car at a specific time of year to make the most of seasonal changes in car prices.

Since modern cars are so well-engineered, safe, and long-lasting, even choosing a five-year-old car that has covered 50,000 miles should offer you many years of problem-free motoring. Below we've rounded up our selection of the best pre-red and used deals on offer right now.

Keep reading to find the best deals on cars in stock that are available to order now for delivery to your door. Not only do you get to avoid new car dealer pricing but you also don't have to worry about the safety implications of traveling around the country going to showrooms following the coronavirus outbreak.

Fancy an electric SUV with a premium badge, but not so much a fan of the premium price tag? A new Jaguar I-Pace will cost more than £66,000 new, and nearly £71,000 in mid-spec SE form, which is the model we've chosen. If you're willing to go for a 2019 model with a few miles on the clock, there are considerable savings to be had.

This example gets a large 10-inch touchscreen media system, all-around parking sensors, keyless entry, and a heated windscreen. SE is the pick of the bunch, as it's better equipped than the entry-level S model, and a fair bit cheaper than top-level HSE trims. If you're willing to pay a bit more, HSE models get a 360-degree camera, a powered tailgate, and an upgraded sound system, but expect to pay at least £41,000 for a used one on buyer.

Fortunately, there's only one power setup to pick, and with 400hp, it's especially quick. The large 90kWh battery gives the I-Pace a theoretical range of almost 300 miles, but 230-250 miles is a more realistic expectation. With a 7kW home charger, it'll take around 13 hours to fully charge.

If you like the idea of low-cost electric motoring, but don't need a large SUV, the Peugeot e-208 is a pretty compelling option. It shares many of its parts with the Vauxhall Corse-e, but we think it's the better-looking of the pair, especially in top-spec GT form.

GT models get a large 10-inch touchscreen media display and a funky 3D-effect digital driver's display, as well as a reversing camera, all-around parking sensors, and bright LED headlights. While a new one would cost around £35,000, the 20-plate model we've found costs more than £8,000 less.

Like the I-Pace above, there's only one motor and battery combination. The 136hp electric motor feels pretty nippy around town and even on quicker roads, and a realistic 200-mile range is possible from a 50kWh battery.

Ford Kuga 2.0 Eco Blue ST-Line X AWD automatic

Sometimes you need to buy a car with your head, and that's often the case for people after a decent tow car. This Ford Kuga has everything, from a 190hp 2.0-liter diesel engine to a four-wheel drive, and a smooth automatic gearbox. With a 2,100kg braked towing capacity, it should be able to deal with most caravans.

In ST-Line X trim, this example comes with a powered tailgate, a wireless phone charger, push-button start, and some pretty eye-catching styling. Despite its fairly high price tag when new, it's a trim level that has sold well, so there should be plenty to choose from.

Besides the 2.0-liter diesel engine which is available in powerful 190hp form or 150hp mild hybrid form, there are some more economical 1.5-liter gallons of diesel, but none of these are available now. Ford has instead focused on its 1.5-liter petrol engine and pair of 2.5-liter hybrids - one self-charging hybrid, and one plug-in hybrid, but these aren't as well suited to towing.

  BMW 118i M Sport automatic

While recent trends have veered towards crossovers and SUVs, there's still a case for the humble family hatchback. For one, due to their smaller size, hatchbacks tend to be more economical. The BMW 1 Series makes a great rival to other premium models like the Mercedes A-Class and more affordable options like the Vauxhall Astra.

Buy used, and even a BMW could be relatively affordable. This 2020 model, in desirable M Sport trim, with a 1.5-liter petrol engine and smooth automatic gearbox, costs less than £25,000. Buy a new like-for-like one today and you'd pay more than £32,000.

Expect plenty of sporty styling tweaks, two-zone climate control, and eco-friendly tires that are designed to reduce rolling resistance. The 118i is the only petrol-powered option available on this side of the performance 128ti and M135i drive models, but if you prefer diesel, you can pick from 116d, 118d, and 120d models.
