thanks to ecobee for sponsoring today's what's going on guys it's your average consumer and today we're checking out something pretty cool this is the ecobee smart thermostat premium now it's been a really long time since we've installed a smart thermostat i think the last time we did it was actually in the gamers paradise and was also with ecobee so we're going to be doing that for the office over here so what we're gonna do is we're gonna go ahead unbox this guy show you guys what you get inside and also take you guys through the installation process and talk about some of the features and why we think this is gonna be a pretty good fit for our office here okay guys so let's take a look at what you get in the box when you pick up the ecobee smart thermostat premium now i'm not gonna lie i really like the attention to detail when it comes to the packaging if you can't tell by the box ecobee is a very environmentally conscious company the entire packaging is made out of recycled materials which is really a nice touch and you'll see this represented more in the thermostat too either way inside the box you're greeted with the thermostat itself which has a really sleek look to it as well as a smart sensor which we'll talk about more later underneath that you'll find a pretty long quick start guide which actually has some useful information so you'll definitely want to check this out to get familiar with the thermostat with that you'll also get a sheet of wire labels and underneath that we get quite a few accessories we're looking at a power extender kit which is optional a back plate screws attachments for the smart sensor and an optional trim plate which i actually ended up using now when it comes to the thermostat itself it's got a very sleek design with a new 50 larger screen and it's got a nice zinc body that makes i feel really premium not to mention a more responsive touch screen for when you interact with it and what's really cool is that it's got radar sensing technology with a 180 degree view so that it can know

 when someone is in the vicinity so it isn't wasting energy and this radar chip is pretty impressive because it can sense through glass walls and doors it's kind of like the superman x-ray vision kind of thing that's awesome not to mention we also have that smart sensor that came in the box so you can place it and keep tabs of what's going on in another room this allows the thermostat and yourself to know the temperature in a separate area so that it isn't wasting energy trying to change the temperature there if it isn't occupied and it has a few other cool features built inside which we'll talk about a little bit more later like a built-in air quality monitor as well as some microphones for the built-in voice assistants like alexa and siri so overall i think the ecobee smart thermostat premium has a pretty nice design looks really good but now let's talk about the installation process okay guys so we've got everything we need to get the job done right here we've got our thermostat as well as all of the tools and the things that came inside of the box here most importantly we have the app so the app is going to give us all of our instructions we'll just follow everything it says it's supposed to be a pretty simple process but i'll let you guys know how it goes and installation was pretty simple thanks to the app even a guy like me who i've admitted on the channel on multiple occasions is not a handyman uh with that app i was able to get the job done especially thanks to those step-by-step instructions now what i found pretty impressive here is that the guide accounts for different situations that may arise throughout the process and gives you solutions for them like with the power extender kit for a second i thought we were going to need it but we ended up having everything we needed without it and got the job done i struggled with some thermostats in the past and having an app with the step-by-step instructions was super helpful throughout the process so it's got a clean look and a pretty straightforward setup process but now let's talk about why you might want this or how it might benefit your home now obviously this is a smart thermostat but what does that really bring you right well one of the biggest things is absolutely going to be energy savings this thermostat has smart home away and scheduling features and let's talk about those for a second with that home or away feature it can detect if anyone's in the home thanks to those sensors and with that if no one's home it'll change it from home to away and vice versa so that it isn't wasting energy and when you do get home and it sets it to home it'll give you the most comfortable

 

temperature and with that schedule assistant it'll start learning your routines as you go and it'll even start making recommendations so that you can get the most out of your energy savings now energy savings is one thing but it also helps you just be more comfortable in the home now what's great about this thermostat is not only can it just read the temperature but it can also read the humidity so that it can give you the right temperature to account for that so you are always comfortable and that's not just based on the actual temperature reading and even the smart sensor comes into play here since you can have this in a room that's usually occupied since the thermostat might not be in that same location and it can give the proper readings to it so that you can get the maximum comfort in that room and another one of the benefits of this thermostat is straight up convenience it has built-in amazon so you can control it with just your voice and like we mentioned earlier it also has siri so you can pick your flavor all right so we've got hooked up and now we can ask it all kinds of questions change thermostat to 77 degrees the ac is set to 77. there you go so you get that control without having to actually walk up to your thermostat or needing an external device to control your smart thermostat it's all just built right into here which is really convenient now what's great is that not only can you control your thermostat you can ask other questions so if you want to know i don't know how tall is the empire state building the empire state building is 1250 feet tall so it works like a smart assistant because it has built right into it so that's some extra functionality that you don't typically find in a thermostat what's nice is that it's got a pretty loud speaker as you guys heard but what i really like is just the overall idea of this so if you have multiple thermostats in your home maybe you've got like two zones you can have this here you can have the other one and what you basically got is a smart assistant that can answer questions or even control your smart home in those rooms so it's really convenient stuff and it takes away needing another device in the room and if you don't want to walk up to the thermostat or use your voice you can just always pull out your smartphone and control it right from there everything that you need right at your fingertips even if you aren't home and like i mentioned earlier this thing also has a built-in air quality monitor which is not something i've seen on any of the thermostats i've used in the past so it's a very nice addition here since it can tell you the air quality of your home give you certain alerts when you need to make changes like changing out your air filter those are the kind of things that you just know you have to do routinely but it's nice to have something that can say hey detecting a little something in the air maybe you should check your air filter i think that's pretty cool and now here's a surprising one home security now we talked about the smart sensor that came in the box but there's an easy add-on that you can get which is also a smart sensor for doors and windows now these are really cool because you can of course attach them to your door or your windows and if those open without your knowledge it'll of course alert you let you know something's going on it makes your ecobee thermostat a security hub which is a feature you don't typically find on your thermostats now another pretty cool feature for the smart sensors is when it's hooked up the smart sensors actually signal your hvac system to pause heating or cooling when a door or window is left open now this is really cool because if this door is open or the windows open and it's letting a bunch of heat in and the thermostat is trying to combat that it's a lot of wasted energy this will automatically pause it which i think just makes a lot of sense i think that's a really cool feature and the ability to

 extend the thermostat's usefulness in that way is pretty smart that's just the overall feel of what you get when you pick up one of these there's a lot of attention to detail little things that you don't realize how useful they are until you actually start using them i think it has a lot to offer and of course if you guys want to check it out i'll have links down below in the description so you guys can grab it but that about wraps up for this video guys hopefully you enjoyed it this is definitely one of the coolest thermostats i've used so far lots of cool smart home integration which i'm in love with but that about wraps it up till the next video guys your average consumer peace.
